Things to do in Valley of Fire
The Valley of Fire state park gives you the chance to see panoramic vistas of bright red Aztec sandstone outcrops nestled in grey and tan limestone mountains. The park is a public recreation and nature preservation area covering over 40,000 acres.
The sandstone dates back to the Jurassic period and is the remnants of the sand left behind by the wind after inland seas subsided and the land rose. These red outcrops are the centrepiece of the park’s attractions and on a sunny day the rock formations look like they are on fire, thus called the Valley of Fire.
Located only 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas, it is a great place for a day trip. Drive through the park and enjoy the amazing vistas created by the pink, red and orange sandstone rocks. View the petroglyphs carved into the rock dating back to prehistoric times. Walk the famous hiking trails and see some of the amazing points of interest such as The Fire Wave, an area with contrasting coloured sandstone creating a wave like illusion. Or make a stop at Rainbow Vista and appreciate this otherworldly landscape from atop the viewpoint.
Open all year round, the park has numerous campsites equipped with shaded tables, BBQ grills, water and restrooms. There is also shaded picnic areas with restrooms for day-trippers. You will find a Visitor Centre within the park, open daily from 8:30am to 4:30pm, it provides information on the geology and history of the park. Here, you will also be able to purchase small souvenirs as a memoir of your visit to the Valley of Fire.
The park is located roughly one hour’s drive from Las Vegas so a guided tour with transportation is recommended.
